Celebrate Water Reuse Week May 17-23

Friday 15 May Celebrate Water Reuse Week May 17-23

As the Treasure Coast’s largest public utility with constant demands on water resources, Port St. Lucie Utility Systems must provide enough water each day to meet the needs of our current and future customers in the most economical way possible. That challenge is met in a number of ways, including making reclaimed water available to local large irrigation-users, such as golf courses and common areas within residential developments. Reclaimed or reuse water is highly treated wastewater, which provides an alternative source for irrigation while reducing the demands on potable (drinking) water supplies.

The Florida Department of Health has determined that reclaimed water poses no threat to public health and that it can safely be used for irrigation purposes. Reclaimed water must meet strict standards established and regulated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Those standards require a high level of treatment, including infiltration and disinfection. The City’s system is operated by a highly-skilled and State-licensed staff, who continuously monitor the reclaimed water quality and regularly test it using sophisticated analytical methods. Although it is highly treated and tested, reclaimed water is not suitable for potable (drinking) water purposes.

Port St. Lucie Utility Systems treats more than 8.6 million gallons of wastewater at its two treatment facilities every day, and produces more than 1.1 million gallons a day of reuse for its customers. Reuse customers include the Floridian Golf & Yacht Club, Santa Lucia Golf River Club, Tesoro Club, and Veranda Gardens West.

Join us in celebrating Water Reuse Week May 17 through May 23, as declared by the South Florida Water Management District, to recognize this important resource and its tremendous benefits.

Port St. Lucie Utility Systems has been a leader in the reclaimed water industry for over 25 years, and is dedicated to protecting our environment and natural water resources, relying on innovative operating and maintenance processes, and providing the highest possible level of service and support.
